Popular Mechanics -- You can pony up a little extra for that vanity plate, but that's about all the choice you get when putting a license plate on your car—you can't grab one from another state, even if it looks better!
License plates are more than simply stiff sheets of aluminum with random assemblages of numbers and letters pressed into them. The colors and styles represent not only the people and landscape of the state itself, but also the period when those plates were issued. There's a sizeable collector market for these pieces of automotive history; a great resource is the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association.

The best NY plate ever is the 1986 version. White background, red stripes top and bottom, blue lettering, and the Statue of Liberty graphic. Classic simplicity.

You wont be getting a two letter reply out of me. OK.Hey hey it just let me scroll whoo hoo. Interesting about the plates. My Gradfather had the same license plate number for YEARS, back in the day they aparently had the first 3 letters or so represent a specific county in OH. and he kept renewing his over and over again. My dad has said several times he would like to buy a personalize plate with the exact same number as his father had when he grew up.
